Rincón de la Vieja volcano. Located in the province of Guanacaste, this volcano has a height of 6,217 feet and an extension of 80 miles. It has more than 9 volcanic openings. The main attraction is that it has a lot of activities such as mud volcanoes and hot springs. It was declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1999, and its most recent eruption was in April 2022.
- Arenal Volcano. Located in the province of Alajuela, it’s 5.47 feet tall and one of the most active volcanoes in Costa Rica. The most recent activity began in 1968, and since then, it has been emitting gases and water vapors.
- Poas Volcano. This 8.88-foot-high volcano has two craters and has been active since 1989, causing acid rain phenomena. You can also visit the Botos lagoon, which is made of rainwater and flows into the Caribbean.
- Irazu volcano. Located in the province of Cartago, it’s the highest volcano in Costa Rica, at 11,259 feet. It’s easy to visit this volcano from the City of San José through paths that go directly to the summit and the craters. If you’re lucky enough and go on a clear day, you can see the two coasts of Costa Rica: the Caribbean Sea and the Pacific.

- Turrialba volcano. It’s the second-highest volcano in Costa Rica at 10,958 feet high and one of the most active. At the base of this volcano is the most important archaeological site in Costa Rica, the Guayabo National Monument, which dates back to pre-Columbian times.
