Recommendations From a Dad and a Friend: Our Family Vacations in Costa Rica

I know, dealing with a family trip is both great and exhausting. But hey, after I tell you everything Costa Rica had for us, you will be booking that plane ticket in no time. If you’re looking to create unforgettable memories with your family, let me share an incredible travel experience that’s perfect for both parents and kids: exploring the beautiful landscapes of Costa Rica with a car rental. Yes, you heard, right, I survived a family road trip with two teenagers on board. So strap in, because I’m about to take you on a thrilling journey filled with lush rainforests, stunning beaches, exciting wildlife encounters, and plenty of family-friendly fun (that even the kids enjoyed – a miracle)!

The Freedom of a Rented Car:

Picture this: cruising down the scenic coastal roads of Costa Rica, your family singing along to your favorite tunes (ours was a 3 hour long Taylor Swift playlist from my daughter, but it was still fun – personally, I am a swiftie myself now), and the freedom to explore at your own pace. Renting a car in Costa Rica opens up a world of possibilities for your family adventure. With the flexibility to stop wherever you want and create your own itinerary, you’re in control of your journey. And we were so happy for that!

Safe and Convenient Travel:

As a parent, safety is always a top priority. I loved not having to thinking about how my kids were going to get home safe after partying at Tamarindo, because I only had to drive for 5 minutes to come pick them up. Renting a car in Costa Rica provides a safe and convenient mode of transportation for your family. And not only that, but it also made the trip easier and budget friendly: from runs to the supermarket to getting to our tours on time, seriously we are only traveling this one onwards.

Family-Friendly Destinations:

Costa Rica is a treasure trove of family-friendly destinations, offering something for everyone. Start your adventure in the capital city of San Jose, where you can explore interactive museums and immerse yourselves in the vibrant culture. From there, venture to the stunning Arenal Volcano region, where you can witness the majestic volcano and enjoy thrilling activities like ziplining and waterfall hikes. We actually stayed at San Jose for about a week and moved around with our car, it saved us so much money from tour transportations to having access to local food or nearby pulpes (small corner shops around) for any emergencies (my wife being hangry) or overall to explore recommendations we found along the way.

National Parks and Wildlife Encounters:

Costa Rica is renowned for its incredible biodiversity, and visiting its national parks is a must for families. Take your rental car to Manuel Antonio National Park, where lush rainforests meet pristine beaches. Hike through the trails, spot playful monkeys and colorful birds, and relax on the sandy shores with your loved ones. Just stay aware and away from the monkeys, they really will steall anything believing it’s food. Trust me, learnt the hardway.

Beach Time and Water Adventures:

No family trip to Costa Rica is complete without a visit to its stunning beaches. From the golden sands of Playa Tamarindo to the tranquil shores of Playa Conchal, the options are endless. Spend your days building sandcastles, splashing in the waves, and snorkeling in crystal-clear waters. For an extra dose of adventure, try your hand at surfing, paddleboarding, or even embark on a family-friendly catamaran tour. We did none of the above because we were more the stay-all-the-at-the-beach-tanning type, but still, it sounds fun.

Educational Experiences:

Everything in Costa Rica is almost a lesson on delicate ecosystems, flora and fauna. Take guided tours everywhere you can, it’s so worth it!

Local Cuisine and Dining:

Exploring Costa Rica’s culinary delights is an adventure in itself. From mouthwatering plantain dishes to fresh seafood delicacies, there’s something to satisfy every palate. Don’t miss the chance to indulge in a traditional “casado” meal, featuring rice, beans, salad, and a choice of protein. We fell in love with the patacones and the gallopinto, my daughters loved the tortillas de queso as well – had them for breakfast almost every day! And pretty budget- friendly, too.

Quick Tips From Our Adventure:
